how this table works

the black through grey spectrum bar refers to your skintype.  the blue range bars refer to which products are suitable for you.

essentially, when you figure out where your skin sits on the grey bar, put an imaginary x on that point & then draw an imaginary line, straight down, similar to this:

so if you figured out that your skin sat on the spectrum, at tending to dry, then a products under the categories of 'dry to very dry', 'normal to very dry', 'normal to dry' & 'all skin types' would be suitable for you.

have you or your kids had a sensitivity reaction to a skincare product?

sensitivity reactions to skincare products may vary from a simple rash to a life-threatening allergic reaction.   a reaction may happen immediately or even after years of use without any problems.

there are 2 kinds of reactions:

  1. irritant reactions - are caused by an irritating ingredient, like ahas or sulphates.   burning, itching or stinging occurs, exactly where the product has been used. (this is usually made worse if used on broken or even dry patches of skin.)

  2. allergic dermatitis – are caused by a true allergy to a specific ingredient. itches, redness & swelling can occur anywhere, not necessarily where the product was used. the usual suspects are fragrances or preservatives but one can be allergic to almost anything.

how to avoid skin reactions to skincare products:

in any case, dry skin is the enemy of sensitive skin. it will always make skin reactions much worse. to improve the condition of sensitive skin:

  • keep skin well hydrated, using appropriate moisturisers & cleansers
  • for kids & adults – add some water-soluble oil to their bathwater.
  • some ingredients strip the skin’s natural oils, making irritations worse. these include soaps & alcohols
  • look for products with minimal ingredients.
  • patch test products on the inside of your elbow and wait up to 72 hours. if you get a reaction, avoid that product. at qed we will always offer you samples.
  • never use skincare products on broken skin.
  • unscented products may still contain a fragrance that is there to mask an unpleasant chemical smell. so if you have an allergy to fragrance, look for products that are fragrance free.
  • any product with water in it must contain preservatives. so if you suspect a sensitivity to preservatives, look for water-free products.
  • most importantly, ask questions (& make sure the person you are talking to knows what they are talking about!)
