Why must you use a separate moisturiser and sunscreen?

I get it, it's beyond convenient to use a moisturiser with included sunscreen on your face. One less step in the morning and you can tick that box as done - you've protected your skin, right? Sorry to be a party pooper, but, wrong!

AND we know that sun protection is the best ANTI-AGING! So, this is serious.

I will give you 3 very good reasons why you need to use a separate sunscreen from your moisturiser.

1. Firstly, it's important to understand how the two actually work. Sunscreen is meant to sit on the surface of the skin to act as a defense between your face and the sun - it sits on the surface in order to block out those harmful UV rays - that's its job. A moisturiser, on the other hand, is designed to work the opposite and its purpose is to penetrate the skin in order to treat and hydrate.

2. In order for your sunscreen to give you adequate protection from the sun, you need to apply approx a 10 cent piece worth of product. Are you applying that much of your precious moisturiser?

3. Technically, for your sunscreen to work, giving you the protection you need, it needs to be reapplied every 2 hours. Firstly, you are going to use up your precious moisturiser in no time. And secondly, depending on your skin type, over-moisturising could turn into breakouts.

So how best should you consider Sunscreen and Moisturiser?

Use them separately as intended and layer. Use your moisturiser first, layer with a good quality sunscreen and then apply your makeup. This way you will be allowing each product to do what it needs to do for effective hydration and effective sun protection ... oh and of course, nothing beats a hat and sunnies! (And they look so glam!)
